R U OK?

R U OK?

R U OK? Day is a day of action dedicated to reminding everyone that, we can all struggle with life up’s and down’s. The day reminds us to check in with; a student, a peer, a friend, a colleague or a parent by asking them R U OK? On the day teachers wore yellow or gold clothing to remind us of the importance of the day and parents purchased yellow ribbons for their child to wear. The College community have provided a great response in support of the day.

R U OK? Day was founded by the late Gavin Larkin in 2009 as a personal project to honour his father, Barry Larkin, who took his own life in 1996.

R U OK’s vision is that when we are connected to someone we are all protected from suicide.

The organisation’s mission is to inspire and empower everyone to connect with the people around them and support anyone struggling with life.

In the time, it takes to have a cup of coffee you can engage with someone about their life’s struggles.

What are the warning signs that someone is not coping with life’s struggles?

It’s time to ask R U OK? if you have noticed a change, no matter how small.

Do they seem:

  • Confused
  • Moody
  • Unable to switch off
  • Concerned about the future
  • Concerned they are a burden
  • Lonely or lacking self-esteem
  • Concerned they are trapped or in pain.

Are they:

  • Experiencing mood swings
  • Becoming withdrawn
  • Changing their online behaviour
  • Losing interest in what they used to love
  • Unable to concentrate
  • Less interested in their appearance and personal hygiene
  • Behaving recklessly
  • Changing their sleep patterns

Are they experiencing:

  • Relationship issues
  • Major health issues
  • Work pressure or constant stress
  • Financial difficulty
  • Loss or someone or something that they care about.
