NORWEST WINS ACCOLADES FOR BUSINESS INITIATIVE

Norwest Christian College expresses an assertive confidence in its energetic approach to being a community member and participant. Educationally the college is committed to guiding students to ‘build purposeful lives’ and this is clearly apparent in its active participation in the Sydney Hills Business Chamber. Recently the college hosted a School-Business links conference; over twenty business leaders/owners/managers participated and joined teachers and several students from Years 10 and 12.

The conference discussed current school-business links such as work experience, mentorships, mock interviews, guest speakers, career advice and ‘expos’, excursions to business/industry, school apprenticeships and traineeships, VET and training programs. Discussion was informed by Year 10 work experience students Breanna and Tristan relating their positive experiences.

Linking with business provide students with significant employability skills – teamwork, communication and presentation; development of aspirations and achievements; enhanced leaderships skills; and an understanding of adult life, employment and business. It was overwhelmingly agreed that business involvement with schools was driven by a genuine desire to assist and support young Australians and their schools – with a strong commitment to community ‘giving’.

Conference participant and Marketing Strategist Hannah Stack commented:

As an active member of the Hills Business Community, I am amazed at the level of engagement and involvement Norwest Christian College has with the business community. I attended a business lunch late last year hosted at and by the college and was blown away by the level of integration their teaching programs have with preparing and engaging students from primary through secondary with local businesses. It is excellent to see the school thinking beyond just the walls of the classroom to educate students. I would highly recommend NWCC;  their ambition and care to provide students with a well rounded and hands on learning experience is outstanding.

Hannah went on to add:

As chairperson of The Hills Business Chamber’s – Young Entrepreneur Initiative ‘YoHu  – Young and Hungry’, I have been nothing but supported by the team at Norwest Christian College. YoHu is a program aimed at those 17-30 year old on their next step in and on their career. NWCC from Day 1 has been on board and continues to support this program with encouraging students engagement in our events and initiatives. As YoHu is only 1 year old, it is the involvement of Norwest Christian College and their students which will really help grow this program.

The relationships between NWCC and business, points the way for all schools and their students to gain from the generous support of business. Transition from school to adult study and work, should include practical experience outside the school gate. Schools and teachers also gain by learning about career pathways and the skills sought by employers.

Business learn how to work with schools and with young Australians and how to help prepare them for employment.

SHBC Member Philip van den Heever is a Special Counsel/Business Development Manager:

Frank Law is honoured and thankful to be in partnership with Norwest Christian College by offering students industry placements and providing legal information to students and staff.

We believe it is essential to have connections between businesses and schools to create community, and empower people towards genuine care for others.

Norwest Christian College is at the forefront of understanding the benefits of having business relationships and we are looking forward to a productive partnership providing long term community benefits.

NWCC acknowledges the wonderful and generous support provided by businesses to the college and other primary and secondary schools in the Hills District and beyond.
