“Teachers are in the relationship business” according to Rod. “To get the best out of each student they need to develop an effective partnership based on mutual respect.” Having spent 29 years in the independent schools sector, his last position being as Deputy Principal at Tara Anglican School, Rod speaks from experience.
Now as Head teacher of PDHPE, Rod is working to maintain the health and wellbeing of College students through a wide variety of sport and educational opportunities. Of his work in the classroom, Rod says that: “My content is not simply delivered but is individualised. I don't want to pitch my lessons to the middle, which is why it is so important to know the capacity of your students.”
Educated at Barker College, at the age of 21 Rod took a gap year to travel the world. During his sojourn he met his wife Shelley while hiking in Yosemite National Park. They now have four children but that hasn’t stopped Rod from pursuing his passions. He enjoys Mountain Biking and is a keen surfer. He also has an impressive collection of pre-1977 surf boards.
Rod’s goal as a teacher is to engage students in ways which inspire them to take ownership of their own learning. “We never want to take for granted the nurturing atmosphere we have at Norwest Christian College.”
